First off, this is clearly a slightly belated blog post – Outpost came to an end last Saturday with a fantastic performance of Parliament Town and an overwhelming response from a rather full audience. For us, it marked the culmination of many months of hard work finding a venue, programming shows, and lifting very heavy tables.
Outpost marked something quite new for New Model Theatre and therefore something a little risky. Going from producing shows to running a venue (inspired greatly by the success of BETA) was something of a step into the unknown. But we like to think we just about pulled it off. We were honoured to host shows by some amazing companies and artists both from the South West and from further afield.
None of this would have been possible without the support of our partners. Urban Splash and the Royal William Bakery both went significantly out of their way to allow us to make Outpost happen in the beautiful Slaughterhouse space. The Barbican Theatre, as ever, have provided the insight of experience, crucial use of their Box Office system and didn’t get too angry when we left a large amount of astroturf in their hallway for a couple of days. And without investment from Arts Council England we would never have been able to make Outpost happen on quite the same scale as we did. It allowed us to bring in shows of the highest quality, provide employment opportunities to local artists and get the word out to audiences across Plymouth and beyond (including someone from Australia).
Finally, thanks to all the volunteers that helped us turn the Bakery into Outpost every evening and to everyone who came down to see a show at the venue. As Dan said on the final night, without you we’d just be a few people in a Bakery playing at theatre. We’ve truly been overwhelmed by the amount of people that have come down and visited Outpost.
We very much hope to be able to make Outpost happen again in the not too distant future but next up for NMT is some R&D work for a new show at The Bike Shed Theatre as part of the MolinoGroup’s [ art:weapon ] season. We’ll be performing some scratch work on Tuesday 18th and Saturday 22nd November if you’d like to come along and help inform our future work.
If you’d like to keep up to date with what we’re up to including future shows, BETA events and Outpost then you can join our mailing list below. We hope to see you soon!
